A chip in your windshield from a rock on the highway seems like a simple fix. Call a glass company, they come to you or you bring the car in, and it is handled quickly. That is exactly right for standalone glass damage. But when a windshield or window breaks in a collision that also hit the body of the car, the repair is not that simple.
Here is how to tell the difference, and why picking the wrong shop can leave your car looking fixed while the frame underneath is still off.
When a glass shop is the right call
A glass shop handles single-component glass damage well: a windshield chip from road debris, a cracked windshield from temperature stress, a rear window broken by a rock, or a door window shattered from a slam. The damage is to the glass itself, and the frame around it is not involved.
In California, windshield replacement is often covered under comprehensive insurance with no deductible, depending on your policy. A glass shop can frequently bill your insurer directly. Check with your insurer before assuming you need to pay out of pocket.
When you need a body shop
If glass broke in a collision, the structure around the glass may be damaged too. That is when a body shop is the right call, not a glass shop alone.
A-pillar or windshield frame damage. The A-pillars are the structural columns on either side of your windshield. If a front-end collision was hard enough to crack the glass, the A-pillar may be bent or compressed. A new windshield installed into a bent frame will not seal correctly, which leads to leaks, wind noise, and a windshield that may not stay in place under force.
Door frame or door glass after a side collision. A side impact that breaks a door window often also bends the door frame. A glass shop can replace the window, but if the door frame is off, the new glass will bind, seal poorly, or rattle. The door has to be repaired before the glass goes in.
Rear window after a rear collision. A rear hit that breaks the back glass may also damage the hatch, trunk lid, or rear body panels. Replacing only the glass fixes what you can see while leaving structural problems underneath. We cover what to watch for in rear-end collision damage.
Airbag deployment near the glass. Front airbag deployment can crack or push a windshield from the inside. When airbags fire, the repair scope goes well beyond the windshield. We explain what that involves in airbag deployment and car repair.
How insurance works for glass in a collision
Collision damage that also involves glass is handled under collision coverage, the same as any other collision repair. Standalone glass damage from road debris, weather, or vandalism typically falls under comprehensive. Your deductible may apply to one and not the other.
When you bring a car to us for collision repair and glass is part of the damage, we handle the glass in the same estimate. You do not need to coordinate with a separate glass company on top of managing an insurance claim. We take care of the whole picture.
What happens if you skip the body shop and go straight to glass
A glass shop installs glass. They do it well. But they are not checking whether the pillar is bent or whether the frame seal will hold under highway pressure. If you have collision damage and only the glass gets replaced, the structural issue stays. Sometimes that shows up as a leak in the first rain. Sometimes the problem only becomes obvious when something hits the car again.
The right sequence after a collision involving glass is: assess the full damage first, then repair the structure, then install the new glass. That is how the repair holds long term and how you avoid a second trip back to the shop for something that should have been caught the first time.
Frequently asked questions
Can a body shop fix windshields or is that only for glass shops?
Both can install windshields. The difference is that a body shop also checks and repairs the frame and pillar structure around the glass, which matters when the damage came from a collision. For standalone glass damage with no collision, a glass shop is fine. For collision-related glass damage, a body shop handles it correctly.
Is windshield replacement covered by insurance in California?
Windshield damage from road debris or weather is typically covered under comprehensive insurance in California, and many policies cover it with no deductible. If the windshield was damaged in a collision, it falls under collision coverage. Check with your insurer, and we can handle the claim coordination for you.
How do I know if the frame around my windshield was damaged in the collision?
Signs include windshield leaks after rain, wind noise at highway speed, or a windshield that looks slightly bowed or uneven in its frame. A body shop inspection checks the pillar and frame before installing new glass to make sure the seal will hold.
What happens if I replace only the glass but the frame is bent?
The new windshield will not seal correctly in a bent frame. Over time this leads to water leaks, wind noise, and a windshield that may not stay in place in a secondary impact. The frame has to be repaired before the glass is installed.
Can I drive with a cracked windshield in California?
California law prohibits driving with a cracked windshield that obstructs the driver's view. Even a crack outside the direct line of sight can grow with temperature changes and become a visibility problem. Get it checked, and confirm with your insurer since windshield damage is often covered with no out-of-pocket cost.
