Two ways to fix a dent
Without repainting. If the paint is not cracked and the metal has not been stretched too far, a dent can sometimes be worked out from behind the panel, and the original paint stays. This is often called paintless dent repair.
With bodywork and paint. If the paint is chipped or cracked, or the metal is creased or stretched, the panel is repaired, smoothed and repainted.
What decides whether a dent is an easy fix
Where the dent is matters as much as how big it is.
- Dents on a flat part of a panel are usually easier than dents on an edge or a sharp body line.
- Sharp creases are harder than round dents.
- Aluminum panels do not move the way steel does and can be harder to work.
- A dent that has cracked the paint needs paint, not only pulling.
Hail and many small dents
Hail leaves many small dents across the roof, hood and trunk. It is often an insurance claim.

It depends on the size, the depth and where the dent is. We will look at it and tell you, and it costs nothing to ask.
Should I fix a small dent or leave it?
A small dent that has not broken the paint will not get worse by itself, so it is mostly a question of how much it bothers you and whether you plan to sell the car. A dent where the paint has cracked can rust, so it is worth having looked at.
