After an accident
What to do after a car accident
A short checklist for the first hours. Save it to your phone. This is general guidance, not legal advice.
- 1
Make sure everyone is safe
Move to a safe spot if you can, turn on your hazard lights, and call 911 if anyone is hurt.
- 2
Take photos
Photograph every vehicle, the damage, the license plates, the road, and any signs nearby. More is better.
- 3
Exchange information
Get the other driver's name, phone number, insurance company, policy number, and license plate. Write down anyone who saw it.
- 4
Stick to the facts
Say what happened, not who is at fault. Let the insurance companies work that out.
- 5
Report it
In California, you must report an accident to the DMV within 10 days (form SR-1) if anyone was hurt or killed, or if the damage to property is more than $1,000. Your insurance company's claim report does not count as this report, and it applies even if the accident was not your fault. If anyone was hurt or killed, a report to law enforcement is also required. You can file the SR-1 online at dmv.ca.gov.
- 6
Call your insurance company
Report the claim and ask what your policy covers, such as towing and a rental car. Write down your claim number and your adjuster's name.
- 7
Choose your repair shop
Your insurance company may suggest a shop, and the choice is still yours. We are not contracted with any insurer, so we work for you.
- 8
Get a written estimate
Get one from any shop you are considering. Bring it to us and we will tell you honestly how ours compares.
- 9
Keep your paperwork together
Hold on to your claim number, estimates, photos, and receipts in one place until the repair is done.
