What Airbag Deployment Means for Your Car Repair and Insurance Claim

More in Insurance Claims and Your Rights →

When an airbag deploys, the accident was significant. That is not a surface repair. The airbag going off means the car's safety systems did exactly what they were designed to do, and now all of those systems need to be reset, inspected, or replaced before the car is safe to drive again.

We walk customers through this more often than most people expect. Here is what you need to know.

Why airbag deployment makes repair more involved

A deployed airbag is not something you can fold back in. The entire airbag module gets replaced. So does the seatbelt pretensioner in most vehicles. These are safety components and they do not get rebuilt or reconditioned. They get replaced with new ones so they will work correctly in the next impact.

Beyond the airbag itself, deployment usually means the collision was severe enough to affect other parts of the car. The impact sensors that triggered the deployment may need replacement or recalibration. The restraint control module, which is the brain of the airbag system, often needs to be replaced or reprogrammed as well.

Modern vehicles also carry sensors woven into the dashboard and steering column area where airbags are. When those deploy, surrounding trim, the dashboard, and sometimes the A-pillar trim need to come apart and go back together correctly. It is not a quick job, but it is one we do.

Does insurance cover airbag deployment?

Yes. Airbag deployment is part of the collision claim. The airbag module replacement, the pretensioner, the sensor resets, the trim, all of it is covered under the same claim as the body damage. You do not need a separate claim for airbag components.

Where it gets more complex is total loss calculations. Airbag replacement is expensive, and it adds significantly to the total repair cost. If the combined repair cost crosses a threshold relative to the car's value, the insurer may call it a total loss instead of approving the repair. We can help you think through that decision. For more on how total loss works in California, see when is a car considered totaled in California.

Is it safe to drive with a deployed airbag?

No. A deployed airbag is a hole where a safety system used to be. You cannot repack it, and driving without a functioning airbag means you have no protection in a second impact. The car needs to be repaired before it goes back on the road.

There are also secondary concerns. The impact that set off the airbag may have damaged structural parts the airbag worked with: frame, suspension, front-end components. The car can look drivable and still have a compromised safety structure underneath. See cosmetic vs. structural collision damage for why this matters and how to tell the difference.

What about driver assistance systems

Newer vehicles have cameras, radar sensors, and computers tied into blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning, lane assist, and automatic emergency braking. A hard impact, especially at the front, can knock those sensors out of alignment or damage them. They need to be calibrated or replaced after a serious collision, not just the airbag.

If your car has any of those features, mention it when you come in for the estimate. We check for ADAS components as part of our inspection process so nothing gets overlooked. For a deeper look at that, see ADAS calibration after a collision.

How the claim process works when airbags deploy

You file the claim the same way you would for any collision. The difference is that when we write the estimate, airbag components are itemized separately because of their cost. We document every affected system with photos and notes, submit the estimate to your insurer, and handle the supplement process if additional damage turns up once the car is opened up.

That is The Painless Collision Process. Our job is to manage the paperwork and the back and forth so yours is just: bring in the car, get the updates, pick up a repaired vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive my car after an airbag deploys?

No. A deployed airbag cannot be repacked and provides no protection in a second impact. The car needs to be repaired and all safety systems restored before it is safe to drive again.

Is airbag replacement covered by insurance?

Yes. Airbag components, including the module, seatbelt pretensioner, and sensor resets, are covered under your collision claim as part of the overall repair. You do not need a separate claim for the airbag system.

How much does airbag replacement cost?

Costs vary significantly by vehicle make and model. A deployed airbag system, including the module, pretensioner, and related sensors, can add thousands to the total repair cost. This is part of why airbag deployment sometimes pushes a vehicle toward a total loss decision. Bring it in and we will give you an honest estimate.

Will my car be totaled if the airbags deployed?

Not automatically. It depends on the total repair cost relative to the car's current market value. Airbag replacement is expensive, but if the rest of the vehicle is in solid shape, repair may still make sense. We can help you work through that decision before you sign anything.

Do my driver assistance features need to be recalibrated after a collision?

Often yes. Cameras, radar sensors, and driver assist systems can be knocked out of alignment in a serious impact. We check for ADAS components during our estimate process so nothing gets overlooked or left uncalibrated.
