If the paint is not cracked and the metal has not been stretched or creased too far, a dent can sometimes be worked out from behind the panel, and the original paint stays. This is often called paintless dent repair.
When it needs paint
If the paint is chipped or cracked, or the metal is creased or stretched, the panel is repaired, smoothed and repainted. Dents on an edge or a sharp body line are harder than dents on a flat part of a panel.
