What paint is made of
Car paint is layers: primer, color, and a clear coat on top. The clear coat protects the color from sun and weather. At Mashore Autobody, when someone brings in a roof or hood with peeling paint, it is almost always the clear coat that has failed.
What shortens its life
- Sun. Roofs, hoods and trunks face the sky and take the most heat and UV.
- Age and a car kept outside.
- A repaint where the surface was not prepared well.
- Harsh cleaning and neglect.
Why it spreads
Once clear coat lifts, water and sun get under it and the color coat goes next. It is much easier to fix early than late. New paint cannot be put over peeling paint, because it will not hold. The failing coat has to come off first.
How long a good paint job lasts
It depends on the preparation, the materials and how the car is kept.
