The estimate is written before the car comes apart
Your insurance company writes its estimate from what it can see, often from photos. Mashore Autobody and any shop works on the car itself. Once panels come off, a shop can find damage that nobody could see at the start. That is the most common reason a shop's number is different from the insurer's.
Other reasons they differ
- Parts. The insurer may list an aftermarket or used part where the shop wants an original one, or the other way around.
- Repair steps. Some repairs have to follow the car maker's procedures, and that can take more labor.
- Labor rates. Insurers and shops do not always agree on what a fair hour costs.
What a supplement is
When extra damage is found, the shop sends your insurance company the added work, with photos, to be approved. That is called a supplement.
